Gen Z couple moved from the U.S. to London and settled on a houseboat: “We feel as if we are living in a picture book for children”

Maisy Dewey grew up in New Jersey’s suburbs, but has spent her entire life traveling back and forth between the United Kingdom. She was raised by her father in London and has dual citizenship with the United States and UK.

Dewey Kent and Harrison Kent (25), her fiancé, met at college. They lived together abroad. Dewey and Harrison Kent lived together in Hong Kong while attending Savannah College of Art and Design. Dewey then studied in France by herself.

The couple decided to move to Philadelphia after graduation to be nearer to their family. Dewey got her dream job as junior graphic designer in Anthropologie headquarters, while Kent took a position at a furniture store.

Dewey Kent shared a house with another roommate, and they paid each other $966 in rent. Wi-Fi costs $80 per month.

The couple shared a Philadelphia townhouse with another roommate before moving to London.

After two years of living in Philadelphia, in 2022 the couple began to consider a new life in Britain.

Dewey told CNBC Make It that it was “one of those things we knew we would never do if we didn’t act now.” It’s a great privilege to hold multiple passports, and I did not want to end my 20s without having lived in the UK for a full year.

Kent started researching to earn his Master’s degree in furniture design. In November 2022 he was accepted at Kingston University Masters of Product & Furniture Design, London. The couple began preparing for their transatlantic move soon after.

Dewey Kent and their dog Kipper, a 2-year-old Dalmatian named after the couple’s pet dog, held many yard sales over the course of one year to rid themselves of unwanted items. The couple, along with their Dalmatian dog named Kipper (aged 2 years), were then ready to move. They didn’t yet have a home in London.

Dewey, Kent, Kipper, and two other personal items were all they had when they moved to London in 2023. The couple rented a short-term apartment because they couldn’t find permanent housing in London, while in America.

Dewey: “I felt like I thought we’d feel settled in the first month, but that didn’t happen.” When you move to a new location and uproot all your belongings, you may not think of the basic necessities you will be missing. “It felt strange to settle down without having much stuff.”

Dewey and Kent both found jobs in London shortly after arriving. Dewey started working in the design field, while Kent began work in a showroom, where he also worked on his master’s degree.

The couple had been searching for months to find the perfect place, and when they contacted the broker, it was already taken. They were taken to a completely different houseboat by the broker.

Dewey claims that living in a houseboat made her a more homebody.

A 65-ft boat with a wide beam has two bedrooms, one bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen. CNBC Make It reviewed documents that show the couple had signed a lease for two years in November 2023, at an average monthly rate of $2,236. The couple paid a deposit just under $2,500 as part of their upfront costs.

Dewey explains, “We live like in a picture book for children.” It adds a lot of fun to my life. “I’m a homebody and living on a boat really has done me in.”

Dewey says that the couple took about four months before they were able to adapt to life abroad. They do miss certain aspects of American culture. Kent misses the convenience of being able go grocery shopping at any time. Dewey misses the people she loves and her family.

Dewey Kent and their friends say that they pay more to live in London. They rely on the public transport exclusively now and spend upwards of PS200 (US $253) a month.

Dewey explains that “living in a larger and more expensive city has made us more aware of our habits. We save when we can.” It is worth every penny for us!” London is a wonderful place to call home. “Me, Harry, and Kipper were so excited to be able explore London together.”

Dewey Kent do not plan on returning to the U.S. any time soon, but they will visit their family this year. Dewey explains that they are going home to visit their families, and not to return to the U.S.

If everyone came here we would never have to go back.

Dewey loves exploring London Kent with her dog Kipper.

Dewey shares her life with TikTok and is doing it more often as she chronicles the life of the couple abroad.

Dewey: “I want people to get a real picture of what it is like to live abroad and in London.” It’s wonderful to share tips and reality with those who may be moving abroad or hoping to do so in the near future.

She adds, “It is very natural for me to be able to talk about what’s going on in my life and it has been surprising how many other people have found this both interesting and useful.”
